Bahia Asuncion: November 10th - 16th, 2023
Let me first say that this blog is going to be a little less wordy than last week. There’s a video included & everything took longer with that. We plan on moving on to an anchorage tomorrow morning. -Which means we probably won’t have access to Wif-Fi much in the next few days, let alone the next week. So, I really wanted to get this out before I wouldn’t be able to.
When I last left you all, we had gotten up at 3AM & left at 5AM from Bahia de Tortugas. Unfortunately, we had to motor all day to Bahia Asunsion. However, it was a nice sunny day & Matt caught a pretty big Dorado/Mahi Mahi which I think lasted us for 3 dinners!
Happy, a boat that we saw in Bahia de Tortugas, came & anchored after we did. Matt got in touch with them on the VHF while they were anchoring. They seemed really nice & hopefully we would get to meet them in person. Since we aren’t really with the Baja Ha-Ha, it would be nice to start meeting other cruisers here.
When we woke up in the morning, Lynn from Happy kayaked by & gave us a sourdough starter. What a sweet gesture! I will have to now learn how to make bread for Matt. And I will HAVE to START using our oven…. one day.
Her & Hugh were going over to the small islands nearby to snorkel. But we needed to go into town. However, we did make plans to meet up with them later in the day; somewhere in town.
We wanted to get a panga to go ashore, mainly because the beach was rocky & it looked like a tough landing by dinghy, but no one was available. So Matt fixed the outboard, (I can’t even remember what was going on with it), & we finally got to shore around 1PM. We went to Sunset Mary’s for lunch. -The best place in town for food & drinks! It’s owned by Tomas & his wife.. They have a pug named, Lee, whose tongue hung outside his mouth. Very cute!
I wanted to use the internet there to upload a video. However it was EXTREMELY slow. I think I got about 45% of it uploaded after 4 hours!
Happily, we did meet a bunch of people which was very fun! Some were cruisers, some were on road trips through Baja. Lynn & Hugh from Happy finally showed up. Unfortunately, we needed to get back before dark to our boat. Mainly, so we could see where MerSea was but also so we could put the anchor light on. We definitely didn’t want anyone crashing into our boat in the dark!
Another cruiser we met in Bahia de Tortugas was Jennifer. She is a bad-ass! She’s a little younger than us but cruising by herself on her 32 foot sailboat!
She also showed up at Bahia Asuncion. We both took our dinghies to shore that morning & decided to go to La Bufadora. -Rojillio from Bahia de Tortugas had mentioned this place & the owner, Shari. We were going to eat there for lunch but there’s no official restaurant. Shari though, told us that we had to get carnitas at this place downtown. I don’t even know if it had a name. But her & everyone else said they were the best carnitas we would ever have!
We had to check this out for ourselves. Amazingly, Shari just offered up her truck to drive there! So crazy! She didn’t know us, really. And she didn’t charge us. She just gave Matt the keys & off the 3 of us went.
This place was on the main strip. I don’t know if it even had a name. We 3 sat down & ordered the carnitas. Now that I think of it, was there anything else on the menu? I don’t know if they are the best carnitas in the world, but they are probably up there! So yummy!
Afterwards, we filled up our diesel cans with fuel at the gas station & put some gas in Shari’s truck.
Jennifer wanted to go back to her boat. However, we wanted to get some internet access. So Jennifer took our diesel cans & brought them back to our dinghy. We dropped Shari’s car off & then went on to Sunset Mary’s. Thomas, the owner was just opening up. We sat down, opened up our computers, ordered some drinks & got to working. I got 85% of my video uploaded! However, when I got back home I closed down the browser & lost everything! Pretty devastated. But got over it quickly, as there are real issues in the world to actually be devastated by. It definitely motivated us though to start thinking about getting Starlink!
The next day, we decided to stay on the boat & get boat work done. I think the wind was strong & so was the current, so it wasn’t as enticing to row to shore that day.
However, the day after that, things were better. We got to shore in the morning & went directly to Sunset Mary’s. We had some lunch & I got 44% uploaded again! We also met another traveler. He was driving down by himself but in a caravan. I think he was on his way to the Sea of Cortez side the next day. Oh, if it was just that easy to get our boat on that side of Baja!
It was Wednesday & I may have not been able to post a video that week but at least I was able to get the blog post out! That definitely made me happy.
We were going to leave early in the morning but the anchor got stuck. What was it stuck on? -You may ask. The sand. Yes, just stuck in the sand. By the time it was light enough for Matt to be able to dive down on the anchor & get it unstuck, it ended up being too late to leave.
No matter though, there were red skies in the morning, (usually a bad omen), & it ended up pouring rain by the afternoon, which made us glad we didn’t go.
We decided the next day that we would leave on Friday. The weather looked like it would be better by then.
So, on Thursday we went back to Sunset Mary’s. It was sad to know it would be our last day there. We would miss Tomas, his wife & Lee.
My video did not upload. Err. Oh well. But we met Wendy & Ber from Ber Necessity. They were in the Baja Ha-Ha & on their way back! Yes, I didn’t mention that the Baja Ha-Ha ended without us really getting to join it. Wendy said they felt kind of rushed during the whole experience. This made us not too sad that we didn’t make the rally. It was nice to be on our own time & experience some places for ourselves.
Anyway, it was so fun to hang with them for the afternoon! They live in Los Angeles, so maybe we’ll see them again!
Friday we got up at 3AM again & took off for Punta Abreojos at 5:15AM. It started out pretty decent - partly sunny. Wind was good. 12 knots. So we put up the Genoa & sailed. We sailed for quite a while! Although in the early afternoon we felt a few sprinkles. Matt put up the tarp up in the cockpit to get us mostly out of the rain. He then proceeded to catch 2 Dorado that day! What a man!
Towards the end of the trip the waves became so bad that we had to take the tarp down. They were probably only 4 feet but they were like a washing machine & coming from different directions. Harriet wasn’t happy. So I ended up hand steering the rest of the rainy way.
We finally anchored before the skies got dark. We were the only boat there! -Hmm.. was that a good or bad sign?
Wondering what will happen in Punta Abreojos? Let’s just say half the time it’s a great surf spot! Were we there during that half?
Wow! Not only do we have a blog out this week but also a video! It’s been a treat to have Wi-Fi at the times we’ve needed it. Click on the pic below & enjoy!
