Cabo Video & Food in Mexico
Wow! Has another week gone by already since we last chatted? We’ve been on the go, for the most part. Just having to take advantage of good weather, when it’s available, as we are on a timeline. Our haul out date in Puerto Penasco is March 20th.
Anyway, things have been going fairly smoothly for a while. Or at least nothing we have been freaking out about. Although, Harriet, our autopilot is seeming like she is ready to retire. She works for a little while & then shuts off. Works for a little while & then shuts off…… Very frustrating; especially for the longer distance sails. What’s actually really frustrating is that Matt has opened up all parts to make sure that they are in good condition. We have 2 motors, 2 controllers & 2 bands. We have mixed & matched them all & nothing changes. So, just not sure what the hell is going on?! It used to work so well. We have no idea what has changed. Maybe Harriet is just ready to retire? We don’t get it! So after this trip we will have to save our pennies for a new auto-pilot.
Oh well, at least we only have 1 overnighter left to go. I think we can handle that. On the other hand, we do have a few long days ahead of us. It’d be nice to have an autopilot work for a little while.
Finally! A more carefree, fun video! We show our elation about being in Cabo San Lucas! It’s our southmost part of our trip! Pretty cool to think that we sailed around “the corner” into the Sea of Cortez! It was an amazing feeling! It still is. Hope you watch the video & celebrate with us!
Want to know about our experience with the food in Mexico? Let’s discuss below:
As far as groceries go, in small towns they are very limited. Surprisingly, produce has been available everywhere! Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, avocados, onions, apples, oranges, bananas & limes…. Aside from that, stores contain mostly chips & cookies. Unfortunately, sugar is in almost everything. And lots of it!
Bigger towns have much more food variety. Cabo probably had the biggest selection. They even had chips that I could have. -Made out of cassava, quinoa & amaranth. I got to also pick up some ginger beer, non-dairy milk & coconut cream. What wasn’t great is that there are not protein bars available, unless you want a pound of sugar with each one. We like to get canned fruit for when we run out of the fresh produce. But there’s even sugar or corn syrup in canned pineapple! I can’t think of anything that needs additional sweetening less than pineapple. It’s crazy!
Thinking we’ve saved money on groceries in Baja? Think again. It’s priced about the same as the Bay Area in California. It’s expensive to deliver products to this desert area. However, surprisingly, produce is very inexpensive! We’ve been stoked about this! For the most part, it’s not organic. You just have to spend time really washing everything extensively.
We get really excited when we find a place that has great, healthy choices!
Eating out is definitely a bit less expensive than the bay area but not by much. Although, almost every restaurant we’ve been to has been excellent! So it’s been worth it every time we’ve ventured out.
At the end of our trip I’ll put the restaurants we loved the most. At this point, our 3 most favorite restaurants have been The Hungry Shark in Cabo, Flora Farms in San Jose del Cabo & 32 Sabores in La Paz. I feel like love is put into every meal we eat here. Not looking forward to going back to the states. I just can’t say the same about the food we’ve eaten there. Very bland & I can’t think of a restaurant that I really look forward to go to again. Except maybe Sushi Go Go in Santa Barbara. And all of my favorite restaurants in Santa Cruz have closed. Really a bummer.
Oh, in case you’ve been wondering, no, we haven’t gotten sick at all from the food here. We know that people have their stories but we haven’t encountered that.
We rarely take photos of our meals but here are our dishes we ordered from The Hungry Shark in Cabo.

We are continuing to enjoy our time here! Trying not to think about our timeline & just enjoy life & exist in the present. I feel like we’ve been pretty successful on doing that. We are constantly busy but not in a rut. Therefore our minds are usually working at the task at hand or just looking around at our new environments. We love it. -Even if it is a lot of work.
Oh, & one more thing….we have officially given up our slip in the Santa Cruz Harbor. Very sad. But not sad, in the sense that we are coming back here in October to continue with this crazy lifestyle. We will definitely miss our dockmates. Hopefully they will let us visit them.
Thanks for reading & watching & subscribing! We know you have a choice on what you read & watch so it does mean a lot to us to have you following our experiences. We wish you all a wonderful week & the blog will return next week to share with you our time in La Paz!
