Our Little Sea Doggie!

On Birdie Watch!

Was it a gamble whether Zephyr would like sailing on MerSea? Hell yes!! He didn't seem to love our other boat, Foxie, very much. -Probably because he got splashed with cold water often in that boat. -Probably why I like it a lot less on that boat. Plus, he couldn't move around much. So we were very lucky that he seems to enjoy being on this boat for the most part. He does get bored sometimes & he doesn't love the dock. But he has cut out his domain on MerSea. Barking at birds & strangers are his two favorite pastimes/jobs aboard.

Someday I'll climb the stairs?

He adapted pretty quickly last year when we first introduced him to this boat. Most of the time there are plenty of places to hang out. -Unless Mommy & Daddy are doing big projects. Then it's like, umm.... maybe you just need a bigger boat guys!

  1. This is my cave!

  2. Snuggly sleep time.

  3. His safe place inside the boat.

He absolutely loves the v-berth! It's his little cave. And he knows he can get away from us if he goes way to the front; making it hard for us to climb up & crawl there to get to him. We do have to lift him up there & bring him down because it's a little high. It's even hard for Mommy to get up there sometimes. Yes, it does get a little cramped for sleeping if he's stubborn about where he wants to sleep. However, look at how cute he is!! We put up with a lot because of this! His parents are suckers for his adorable factor.

And if there is no space, a box is always good.

What made me choose Zephyr as the subject of this week's podcast is that we are going away to Austin this week. -Matt's family lives there. I hate leaving him behind. He is the closest being to a child that we will ever have. And he's my little shadow every day. In fact, one of the reasons I really wanted a boat was so that we could travel & bring him along. I know this adds for extra work when sailing/cruising but he's so worth it. Certain challenges will have to be overcome. Like: getting him to go potty on the boat, being able to take him everywhere we want to go, making sure his barking is kept to a minimum & at the appropriate times, keeping him cool, keeping him warm, having access to medical attention, getting him enough exercise, etc. I believe these can all be worked out with some creativity, some compromises & some sacrifices.

  1. I gravitate towards the one thing on the deck I can scratch up!

  2. Do you love me enough to go without solar?

Luckily we just recently found out that he can swim when he ran inadvertently into a friend's pool at their BBQ. It didn't seem to phase him at all & he knew what to do & where to go to get out. Does he have a secret life we don't know about? I've been wanting to get him to swim, but the water is so cold here in Santa Cruz that there's no way he's going into the ocean if I'm not going into the ocean. And I am NOT going into the ocean here! We will just have to wait until we are in SoCal for that time to come. Thankfully, he doesn't mind wearing his life-jacket. -Which is totally hilarious because he hates his walking harness that we put on him every day for walks.

I even love kayaking!

He does love the beach! So I will be super stoked when we can start anchoring more at beaches where we can take him to run around, sniffing everything & if he's lucky: getting chased by a dog or two. Oh, & the birds, if there are birds flying then that tops off the perfect day for him. However, if they are on the ground, he can't be bothered. Seriously, are they even birds if they aren't flying?

Most likely I'll be looking at this post a lot during the week. I miss him so much when he isn't around. I always get scared that he'll think we have abandoned him. He does suffer from separation anxiety & needs the rest of his pack to be near him. In fact, he barks ferociously when either of us leaves the house! How dare we split up!

XXO!

We'll miss you boy when we're gone. Damn! I wish that you had internet access while we are away. Oh, & I wish you could read. Anyway, we love you & love that you have shared our sailing life with us!
