Day Dreaming Sailing
No sailing last week. My husband was too busy. And while I think I could actually sail the boat on my own, there is no way I am willing to try & back the boat into the water. A few months ago we actually saw someone lose control of their fairly new SUV & watched it as it sank to the bottom of the harbor. So that freaked me out too much. Matt is definitely the one to be on boat ramp duty. Since our ultimate goal is to have a boat that is already in the water & won't need to go down a ramp, I'm okay with being ignorant on this skill. Although I would be willing to try if there was a dire need for me to.
This week, however, we were able to sail. Sort of... Tuesday we went out for a sail but when we got to the harbor mouth there were 5 foot swells & it was really, really foggy. We thought it would be unsafe for us to go outside of the harbor. So we just sailed around it. Actually, Matt just sailed around it. I get too chicken to sail in the harbor. So nervous about hitting another boat. Man, I can't wait to get a boat with a motor on it. Although I probably should practice moving in tight spaces under sail as someday we might have a sailboat & the motor could go out.
I know this sounds a little cuckoo but I keep getting messages from God/The Universe/ My Spirit Guides that we will be getting our cruising boat this month. I am trying my hardest not to be doubtful & just go with the flow & believe this message. But it's not easy at times. Right now I'm not feeling so sure but a few days ago I was. So just trying to be open to all the creative possibilities that I can't even think of on my own. You see, our bank accounts, at the moment, are in need of much more money if we would like to purchase a cruising boat. But hey, if an unforeseen miracle is coming towards us I will just do my best to not get in the way.
Aside from that, I've just been reading a bunch of sailing material:
Coastal Cruising Made Easy, by ASA
This is from the course that we just took & passed. Well, we passed the physical part but still need to take the written exam. It is nice to get more familiar with all the terminology. We physically know more than we can express. It's very helpful though to call something by it's proper name rather than saying, "Can you do such & such with the thingamajiggy?".
Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, by Don Casey.
I'm finding this book pretty fascinating. Reading it so that I will know what to look for when we start seriously looking for our cruising boat. I don't know a lot about mechanics, which makes it a little tough in some areas to understand but I'll read it again to make sure I have the process down. I love that this book is straight to the point with everything. He doesn't ramble on at all.
Dove, by Robin Lee Graham
I read this about 20 years ago & thought I'd read it again. I remember thinking it was fascinating & was excited to read it again. Unfortunately what sticks out to me this time is his complaining. I'm thinking to myself while I'm reading it that he's pretty ungrateful for such an amazing experience. But then I think, well when I was 18/19, (which is what he was during his circumnavigation), I complained a lot too. So not sure if I would have appreciated it at that age either. Now I can't even imagine of being so cranky if I was given that opportunity. I'm 48 though & have probably matured somewhat since that age so of course I wouldn't complain now. LOL. It was only a 24 foot boat though. And it did seem like maybe a little more adventure than I'd be up for now. So there's that.
Moving on, winds look pretty light this week. We'll see if they are enough to go sailing. Fingers crossed. But whatever will be will be. And really hoping I can get my act together enough to post again next Friday. And I also hope I have more fun things to report!
