San Felipe: March 2nd - 4th

The marina that refuses to die.

San Felipe - It’s all a blur now, but I feel like I did take more photos of this place. However, I cannot find them so maybe they are hiding somewhere? Let’s hope I can at least find all the video I took.

Location of San Felipe

We left Puertocitos early & we were happily surprised that Harriet started working again! Have no idea what Matt did! -Something magical! We crossed our fingers that she would work again for our last leg, which would be an overnighter to Puerto Penasco in a few days.

San Felipe is kind of a tricky marina to get into. You really need to make sure that the tide is high enough to get into it. I think at some places it was only 4 feet on our way in.

Luckily they had a slip for us. -The only slip left available. And there aren’t that many to begin with. I think there were like 4! I’m wondering though if they are letting the place crumble to the ground or waiting for someone to rescue it or waiting to start repairing it. It’s in bad shape. The staff was really nice though. And the Mexican Navy was right next to us on the dock. So we felt welcome & very safe.

On the other side of us was a very interesting boat. Not sure what was going on with it. But it looked like someone needed to put it out of it’s misery. What can I say? At least the place was interesting.

What was really cool was there there was a humongous beach by us for Zephyr to run on! And….a TON of birds to chase! He was in heaven!

Unfortunately there was no water in the marina on the 2nd day we were there. -When we were all ready to take showers… Something I will appreciate when we get a bigger boat someday. -No need to wait to get to marinas to take hot showers. And we will be able to convert ocean water into fresh water! Yes, Matt is that magical!

Nice huge beach for Zephyr to chase some birdies on.

The 2nd full day that we were there, my friend Gabrielle, gave me her dad’s phone number, (he lives there), & so we set up a time to meet with him.

He was kind enough to pick us up & take us out to lunch. I can’t say that I remember the name of the place but it was good. The 3 of us had Birria; a spicy stew made with goat or beef. I want to say that lunch for all of us cost less than $12 including tip! Crazy!

Afterwards he took us on a sightseeing tour of San Felipe! -Which would have been hard for us to do without a car. It’s somewhat of a spread-out town. And all of it is very far from the marina. -So definitely not convenient for cruisers. -Which is probably why most cruisers don’t even venture to San Felipe.

The town consists of the Malecon -the strip along the beach with shops & restaurants. And then there are a bunch of ex-pat neighborhoods scattered about. Pretty nice & very inexpensive!

He then took Matt & I to a pretty big supermarket. I don’t think we had been to that big of a market since La Paz. So that was fun!

When we were properly loaded up with bags of food he then drove us back to the marina. Such a kind thing to do! Thanks Bob! We had a great time with you!

We decided to leave the following day. The weather was going to be super calm, which is always nice for a night passage. -Even if there is absolutely no wind.

And it was a mellow passage across the Sea of Cortez. Almost so much that I think it was harder for me to stay awake that night. It’s usually not too bad. But it was a beautiful night. And… And…Harriet worked the whole way! A totally uneventful ride!

Adios San Felipe.

We got into Puerto Penasco early in the morning. -Watching the sun come up is the best! And that is where I will leave you all. -On a happily ever after note!

Daddy, will you read me a bedtime story?

Thanks for reading! I apologize there not being more to look at. But there will be next week when we take you with us to a few little secluded anchorages! See you Wednesday! Until then, back-up your photos & videos!
