Anchorage Hopping: February 18th - 22nd, 2024
We saw a weather window to continue north from Santa Rosalia. So we left in the evening to sail the 70 plus miles to the next anchorage, San Francisquito.
San Francisquito was a beautiful bay & we were excited to explore it after getting some rest from the long trip.
When we got to the shore, Zephyr was so excited to have a huge beach to run around on. -Which Santa Rosalia didn’t have. I think this is Zephyr’s favorite aspect about cruising Mexico. There are just so many shores to run free on here! Very different from the states.
Anyway, we decided to take a short hike along the arroyo to see what was new & exciting about this place. And there actually wasn’t much. We were now in northern Baja & it’s definitely a desert here. So the hike was pretty short & we went back to the beach & then to the boat.
Upon getting back to MerSea, we noticed a few bees around. Then we got inside the boat & noticed a few more. Even though it was hot out we enclosed the boat so more bees wouldn’t come in while we captured the ones that were there & set them free outside. However, this seemed to make it more desirable for them to find a way to get in through any little crack & crevice. It became a little INSANE to say the least. They weren’t interested in stinging us, so that was good. Unfortunately though, Zephyr doesn’t seem to know the difference between bees & flies. And he kept trying to catch them with his mouth. So what else could we do except put a packing bag with mesh over his head to protect him. Knowing Zephyr & how fussy he is I thought this might be a losing battle. But he didn’t seem to mind having this new fancy hat on his head! This was almost more insane than all of the bees! He wasn’t bothered one bit! And that made the whole experience more wacky!
The next day, we knew that we didn’t want to hang around for another afternoon with bees. Therefore, it was time to move on to the next anchorage, Animas. It was a lovely day with some sailing off & on. And then finding we had the whole anchorage to ourselves, except for the fishermen onshore.
Los Animas:
Since it was such a nice peaceful spot, we decided to stay 2 nights. I had a slight cold & wasn’t feeling well but Matt got to go snorkeling a few times. He took a GoPro with him & it fell off his head. He wasn’t sure when but thought that he could probably find it in the morning. I was somewhat skeptical, as it’s black & he probably lost it near the rocks, which have a lot of dark shadows. So I was pretty amazed when he went back the next morning & found it! Actually, I shouldn’t have been so amazed. There’s not much he can’t do!
We moved on to the next anchorage, Ensenada del Alacran. It was a wide sweeping bay with a little eco resort on it’s shore. Again, we were the only boat. -The further north you go in the Sea of Cortez, the less boats you’ll see. As others told us, we were going the wrong way. We were headed into colder weather rather than warmer. But it is what’s necessary being on our schedule.
Scenes from Ensenada del Alacran:
There was a storm coming so, we opted to move to a more protected spot around the corner. And that is where I will leave you for now.
I do want to say that I’ve noticed that the more I get into shooting video for our voyage, the less I remember to also take photos. So, I do realize that the photos here might be on the lean side. On the other hand, when the video comes out for these spots you will definitely get to see more. Wait until you see the bee footage!
Thanks again for stopping by here! Next week we’ll have another video for you of Puerto Escondido! Until then, sweet dreams!
