San Jose del Cabo: December 7th - 18th, 2023
After Matt retrieved our rocker stopper, we were good to go & took off for San Jose del Cabo. There wasn’t any wind. So, yes, we hade to motor. But it was just a 3 mile ride. -Not a big deal. Beautiful sunny day though!
Got a slip! 1st slip since Ensenada! So weird to have this luxury again. So weird not to be constantly rocking around. We went on a walk to the office with Zephyr. There were a lot of cool sculptures around the marina! Then we checked in at office. The staff were so nice & helpful.
We got back to the boat & I felt pretty exhausted. Not sure why. It’s not like we were on a long sail or anything that day. Maybe it was just because we did so much in the last few days. I think maybe my body was adjusting to more excitement!
However, Matt really wanted to go on the Art Walk. It’s something that downtown San Jose del Cabo does every week! I wanted to go but just felt like I wanted to lay down & go to bed. However, I knew I would regret it if I missed it. So we summoned an Uber & went!
San Jose del Cabo Marina. Lots of artwork around the slips! Kind of fun!
I’m so glad we went! It was really beautiful & fun. All the artists were out in their booths selling their wares. -Everything from jewelry to baked goods to paintings. After walking around a while, we were definitely hungry. And I spotted a place that looked enchanting on a second story balcony. We just couldn’t figure out how to get up to the restaurant. It took a while & it turned out you need to go through a store to get to it.
And it did actually turn out to be enchanting. The name of the restaurant is Santoro, & the food was delicious! The service was superb. So, if you do go to San Jose del Cabo, check this place out.
Art walk night! - Every Thursday in the historical part of town.
On Saturday I realized, I hadn’t showered in a proper shower since Ensenada! So, I made a run for the marina showers. -Which were very clean & updated. The only problem was that the shower was cold. I’m sure during the warmer months this is refreshing. But in December, not so much. -Especially, since my hair takes all day to dry. I dealt with it anyway. It was nice to be clean. And it was sunny & somewhat warm outside. And we have a heater onboard the boat. So I could take advantage of that if I couldn’t warm up again.
I also took laundry in to a laundromat about a 10 - 15 minute walk from our dock. No self-service; which was fine. It would be ready the next afternoon.
It was nice to get some ordinary stuff done. I think it had been a month since we really got the every day conveniences.
Plus, we met a guy, who’s now a good friend, Dan! He was on the same dock as us in his boat & this was his first time in the Sea of Cortez too.
That evening we went to dinner at Hotel Granzo. It’s on the north side of the marina. -About a 10 minute walk. -We were in the middle of the marina.
This hotel is pretty stylish. I think it’s also pretty expensive. Very creative atmosphere. We explored the place after dinner. Very cool!
The food was also yummy. There was supposed to be a band playing, but they only played like one song & then took a break? Weird. The music was kind of blah so we weren’t too disappointed. We just stared at the band sitting there talking in the lounge area.
Hotel Granzo. On the north side of the marina.
A few days later we went downtown to La Comer! La Comer is full of good stuff! Produce that’s organic. Every type of meat & cheese you can think of. A bunch of stuff that I wasn’t allergic to, including non-dairy ice cream!
Since the marina WiFi wasn’t the greatest we decided to find a coffee shop to get online to do some work. We found a cafe. Cafe Baral Bar. Cute little place with good coffee & good smoothies! There we met Marco, who was running the place. He was amazed at what we were doing. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of how amazing or crazy what we’re doing is!
Not sure where to start but if you ever get a chance to visit Flora Farms, do it! Can’t rave about it enough! Yes, it is highly priced but so worth it! Everything was incredible! -From the property/atmosphere to the service to the food. In addition, we got to talking with both of our neighbors at the tables on each side of us. Very fun!
Flora Farms!
Wednesday nights are Flamenco nights at Hotel Granzo!
On Thursday we changed docks in the morning. I guess another boat was coming in. It was only one dock over. Therefore, not too big of a deal but our original slip was cheaper. Wish we only knew when we made the reservation originally that we would stay longer. I forget if we stayed longer to wait for items to arrive or if the weather wasn’t going to be very good.
That evening we asked Dan & Lori & Chad from Wayfinder to go to the Art Walk with us. We had to show them this cool phenomenon that goes on every Thursday downtown. Dan came with us in the Uber & we met up with Lori, Chad & their daughter, Hannah at a restaurant.
I actually just remembered that is when we introduced Dan to Lori & Chad. -They’ve stayed in touch since. Bringing people together is fun!
After dinner we all went walking around. The place does really get magical after dark!
Friday we worked all day. Matt fixed a bunch of chainplates. We didn’t want to take any more chances. Turns out that the one that came out between San Quinting & Bahia de Tortugas was the only one that was rusted through. But I can’t thank Matt enough for checking & reinstalling the chainplates securely to the deck.
That afternoon we went over to Dan’s boat for drinks & appetizers. Chad & Lori also met us there. Fun afternoon, evening. We feel so lucky to have met the most awesome people! (I think this was the last time that we got to hang out with Lori & Chad.) They are currently on the mainland in Mazatlan but I really hope we can meet up with them again next season!
After that, we were still feeling the need for more food. So decided to got back to The Hookup. Of course I got the sushi again. I mean, when you find good sushi, you need to take advantage of it! We had fun talking to Martin. He is a lovely guy. We definitely want to go back to see him next time we are in San Jose del Cabo.
On Saturday, since we were leaving the next day, we wanted to go provisioning 1 last time. As it would be at least a week before we were going to get to La Paz. We went back to La Comer. Got as much as we possibly could wheel in a cart from the Uber drop off point to our slip. Yes, we maxed out on weight.
We woke up on Sunday morning, when we were going to leave, & Matt wasn’t feeling too great. Plus, the winds were kind of gnarly. So we asked to stay just one more day. I took the opportunity to clean up the boat a little more. But mostly I worked on the blog & a video; which always take up a whole day.
Fortunately Monday morning came & Matt was feeling a lot better so we took off to the next place!
I really hope we can go back to San Jose del Cabo. As expensive as it is, it’s got such a uniqueness to it that I can’t quite put my finger on. I know that there was a lot of new buildings that looked like they had true architects & interior designers work on. -Mostly sustainable. And definitely not cookie cutter. I like any design that takes a chance. -Especially if it involves color. All the food we ate was amazing! -Well there was this one place. I don’t even remember the name of it because it was really bland both in food & atmosphere. We were just hungry & it was there. Aside from that though, I was very impressed.
Anyway, I feel like it would be fun to explore more. We’ll see if we have the chance this coming autumn.
Hi Sir. No, you can’t fall asleep at the bar. You’ll have to leave Sir. Should I call you a cab?
